Kate is a swimming sensation!
On Tuesday 6th September, Kate Steels-Fryatt fulfilled a childhood ambition - to swim the English Channel.
Kate set off from Dover, and after a gruelling 13 hours and 5 minutes, she set foot on the rocks at Cap Petit Blanc, France.
This 21 mile swimming challenge is often described as the "Everest of open water swimming" and had long been a dream of hers to achieve.
The English Channel is one of the busiest shipping channels in the world, not only did she have to negotiate her way through this, but she had to contend with jellyfish too!
Channel rules state that challengers are not allowed to wear wetsuits, just swimming costumes, swimming hats and goggles. Kate was also not allowed assistance throughout the challenge either. This meant that she could not touch anyone or her support boat. Her team threw her drinks and bananas on a rope!
After completing the challenge, Kate said:
I feel over the moon after having achieved my childhood dream and successfully swum the Channel. It is an amazing feeling and I am delighted with my time of 13 hours and 5 minutes. I cannot put into words the wonderful feeling of sand on my feet when I reached France. In taking on this challenge, which is the Everest of Open Water Swimming, I wanted to raise money for a local charity. Naomi House & Jacksplace are a brilliant charity making a tremendous difference so many children and young people and I am very pleased to be able to help support them.
Paris Smith who contributed towards the costs of Kate's challenge. They said:
Paris Smith was delighted to be able play its part to support Kate in her challenge. It is a tremendous feat of endurance and we are delighted that she achieved her goal, raising funds for Naomi House whose team are so passionate about improving the quality of life of so many in the Wessex region.
So far, Kate has raised an incredible £1,679.25 for our hospices! To find out more and to sponsor her, visit her fundraising page >>
