As a young woman with a chronic disability, it’s difficult to watch friends and family having independent lives. Coming to Jacksplace gives me that independence, even though I am fully dependent on care. Being away from family and my day-to-day care allows me the much-needed space from my daily routine.

In recent years, major developments in medicine and care have meant that more children can now be expected to reach adulthood. As a result, Jacksplace was built in 2010 as a hospice to offer care specifically for young adults aged 16 and over.

Jacksplace is the only hospice for young adults in our region, offering the care and support they need, but also giving them the independence they often crave. We achieve this through 24 hour nursing care alongside activities and social events, both at the hospice and further afield.

Jacksplace offers the same range of care and support available at Naomi House, including family support, an activities team, end of life care and post bereavement support. The young adults’ hospice has six bedrooms, equipped with specialist beds, hoists and state of the art en-suite bathrooms.

The hydrotherapy pool provides fun, relaxation and therapy for the young adults visiting Jacksplace, whilst our day service offers opportunities to meet people in similar situations, make friends and enjoy social activities.

For young adults with sensory needs, the pool is a favourite, and the sensory room is ideal for relaxing and enjoying time out. Our Play Team organise stimulating games and activities for the young adults visiting Jacksplace, with their needs and abilities in mind, as well as organising exciting events and outings too, so there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Jacksplace is a bright and happy place with wonderful staff, where you can hang out with friends and meet new people. You can play board games, enjoy arts and crafts, get engrossed in virtual reality, have a massage, relax in the garden, or meet at Jack’s Cabin for a drink. Jacksplace give respite for me and my family.

Respite Care

Each young adult accepted for care at Jacksplace will be able to enjoy a number of respite nights in house, where the staff will be on hand 24 hours each day to help and support with all of their care needs. This is an opportunity to have some space and time away from home, shared with other young people of similar age and similar life experiences.

There is no family accommodation at Jacksplace, as our young people are supported in building their independence and confidence as young adults.

During respite stays, there are often opportunities to go out in the local area to the pub, the cinema or bowling; and when there are particular events happening, we will often be able to invite those young adults who are not staying in house at the time to join us, perhaps at a music festival or car show.

Our day service is organised throughout the week and enables young adults to meet up with a similar group of peers each week at Jacksplace, encouraging friendships, shared projects and activities.

Bereavement Support

Inevitably there are some sad times at Jacksplace. On these occasions, Jacksplace offers the Ocean bedroom; a chilled room in which a young adult can be laid to rest in the immediate post-death period, and until such time as the family are ready to say their goodbyes. Our Family Support Team helps with funeral arrangements and other such practicalities. Specialist bereavement counsellors, sibling support staff and our hospice Chaplain offer support to families for as long as they are needed.
