Two volunteers take pre-loved bikes and make them road ready, to raise money for Naomi House & Jacksplace

Earlier in the year, a team of two talented bike enthusiasts - Richard Hollingdale and Luke Brashier - came up with a brilliant idea to support Naomi House & Jacksplace.

Richard and Luke now volunteer their skills and transform donated pre-loved bicycles into fully serviced, road-ready bikes – ready for sale in Naomi House & Jacksplace charity shops. They have tirelessly built this idea into a fully functioning and successful project - a superb example of volunteer-led drive and ambition.

Launching in August 2021, the Recycle Bike Hub has raised over £3,000 for Naomi House & Jacksplace hospices, through the sale of 55 bikes in the hospice’s charity shops in Chineham and North End shops.

At present, the bikes are available at our Chineham and North End shops.

The Recycle Bike Hub project has three objectives. Stop bikes from going to landfill; get more people cycling on affordable bikes; and raise as much money as we can for Naomi House & Jacksplace. We want to make as much impact as we can and that all starts with the great bike donations we have received. Every bike we have refreshed & repaired in our workshop has been sold – so it looks like we have a successful fundraising project that will keep us busy

To make this volunteer-led project possible, Richard and Luke needed a workshop. This made possible with generous financial support from Sun Life Financial of Canada. The team of volunteers were then set up with the tools they needed to service and deliver road-ready bikes.

The grant from Sun Life Financial Canada supported another of Richard and Luke’s ambitions – to offer volunteering opportunities to like-minded bike enthusiasts, so that they could join the team and hone their skills in the workshop.

The Bike Hub epitomises everything that the charity is about. We have local people, using their skills to make a huge difference for local children and families. The other great element to the scheme is that people who purchase the bikes can be confident that the bikes have been fully serviced and are in good working order. Huge thanks to Richard, Luke and all the team involved. Another example of volunteering at its very best.
