Doctor - Sessional basis

Closing date: 30 April 2024

Responsibilities:

The Wessex Children’s Hospice Trust supports children, young people and their families across south central England. It comprises Naomi House, an established children’s hospice offering palliative care services to children from birth to age 18, and Jacksplace, a purpose built facility offering palliative services for young people from the ages of 18 to 35.

A nurse led service, we provide individualised care on a 24 hour basis, managing patients with an increasing range of complex needs. We also have a dynamic play & activities team as well as a large family support team. Our doctors provide crucial medical input on a daily basis, for patients receiving respite care, complex symptom management or end of life care. The medical team is underpinned by two specialist Paediatric Palliative Care Consultants and an Associate Specialist in Adult Palliative Care.

We are seeking to recruit one or two senior doctors who are members of either the RCGP or RCPCH to join our passionate and dedicated medical team.  You will require acute clinical and paediatric experience, excellent communication skills and empathy with children, young people and their families. Ideally you will have experience in the provision of end of life care. As we continue to develop our services, you will have the opportunity to make contributions to our learning and our services. Our team is currently made up of Consultant Paediatricians/Associate specialists from both tertiary and secondary level hospitals/community trusts.

Our doctors provide medical “on call” cover typically for a 24hr shift (usually on the same weekday every week or alternate weeks) plus a share of weekends (usually one weekend in six or less). This may be flexible to your desired working. When “on call” you would be expected to visit the hospice as required to admit/review patients (typical visit would last 2-3 hours) and be available by telephone for advice at any time. You must be able to visit the hospice on an emergency basis within an hour of being called at any time during your on-call period. We are specifically looking for doctors able to regularly cover Mondays (day and night) or Friday (daytime), in addition to some weekend cover.

Payment is calculated according to the number of sessions conducted, plus appropriate on-call rates. Successful candidates are subject to reference checks, including an enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service and are responsible for arranging their own indemnity for the work undertaken with the Trust. The Trust will reimburse reasonable costs relating to this work uniquely.
