Big 5: Aqua Quest

This month, Scott Stephens, CEO of FORTH, took on an ambitious challenge: to kayak around the Isle of Wight in three days, which him and Sam Sutton from New Forest Activities and Steve Mead from Liquid Logistics amazingly completed in only two days, all in support of our hospices.

Scott, Sam, Steve and our very own Naomi House & Jacksplace, Jack the bear, set off from St Helens. The team completed 65 miles, the full distance around the Isle of Wight. Whilst navigating the southern part of the island, the team experienced strong winds and large waves. Conditions which meant that to safely complete the challenge, some of the required distance was covered by redoing parts of the previous days section. Thus, avoiding the most dangerous and exposed parts of coastline.

They covered the full distance, tested their stamina, and raised vital funds! Help Scott and the team reach their target goal of £5,000. This is all part of the Big 5 challenges where five trailblazing executives from our corporate partner family, together, aim to raise an incredible £25,000 - which is enough to fund five months of care from a specialist nurse.

Taking on the Big Five Challenge of 65 miles on the Isle of Wight, was without doubt one of the toughest things I’ve done physically and mentally. The early starts, the long hours on the water, and the relentless wind and swell at times pushed us to the limit. But every stroke was worth it, knowing the effort goes towards supporting the children, young adults and families who rely on Naomi House & Jacksplace. To finish this journey as a team with support from so many, and for such a special cause, has been an unforgettable experience. And something I’m hugely proud of.

The Big Five Challenge was an epic undertaking - not just for those of us on the water, but for everyone behind the scenes too. From the early planning and training sessions, to the safety support, logistics, and endless encouragement - it was a full team effort from start to finish.

Massive thanks to everyone who played a part, both on and off the water. Fundraisers like this aren’t just about the final distance - they’re about community, resilience, and making a difference.

Being part of the Big Five Challenge was something I’ll never forget. Over 90 kilometres around the Isle of Wight, I saw Scott push himself in the conditions, and it was inspiring to be there with him every paddle stroke of the way.

I feel grateful to have shared the journey, from the initial idea, through winter training and planning to the tough moments on the water and the celebrations at the finish. It reminded me just how powerful resilience, teamwork and community can be when pulling together for an amazing charity. A BIG Thank you to all involved.
