The incidence of children receiving long term respiratory support via tracheostomy has increased considerably over recent years. As a consequence, there is a growing demand for continuing care and support in the community to enable these children and their families to live safely in their own homes, and continue their day-to-day family lives. It can take a number of months to develop such packages of care, and in the meantime, although medically fit to be at home, children remain in hospital whilst carers are recruited and trained in the necessary skills to care for the child at home.
The Naomi House Long Term Ventilation Unit is a funded facility, whose purpose is to facilitate a timely stepped discharge from hospital. Self-catering family accommodation is available to enable parents to understand and manage the new needs of the whole family, whilst working in partnership with the Naomi House clinical team in looking after their child. Ongoing assessment of the child’s health needs will be maintained by the partnership working we have with the LTV team at Southampton General Hospital: both the LTV nurses and the consultant visit the Naomi House unit regularly.
Preparation for discharge home is a priority and our aim will be to facilitate a safe and timely discharge as soon as possible. Our experienced team will be available to support the family in all areas of training and discharge planning, and those recruited for the care package can be easily supported in their training also.
We can encourage further transition by way of short trips out from the unit and possible overnight stays at home, helping to build the family’s confidence in looking after their child whilst maintaining easy access to support.
Throughout the stay, our nurses and carers will support day to day care of the child, and our paediatric physiotherapist will be available for respiratory and musculoskeletal support as necessary. The Family Support team offer psychosocial support for all members of the family, and we have a Social Worker within the team who can advise and facilitate access to wider services. Our Play and Activities team will be on hand with appropriate games and experiences according to the child’s age and development.
The 3 bedded unit sits within the buildings of Naomi House and Jacksplace in Sutton Scotney, near Winchester. It is a spacious area incorporating rooms for the referred children, a communal dining room/activity area and lounge overlooking the gardens.
There is family accommodation for 2 families with ensuite bedrooms, shared lounge/kitchen/diner and laundry facilities.
We are within walking distance of the village amenities including a shop, pub and children’s play area, and there is easy road access to the A34 and A30. We have onsite parking for families and visitors. Family visitors are welcome during the day, by arrangement with the Care team.
