We recently spoke to a group of young adults that regularly visit Jacksplace about what the hospice means to them, and how they are supported here. They wanted to share their thoughts for anyone who is considering coming to Jacksplace.

Everything at Jacksplace is tailored and personalised to each and every one of us. Nothing is ‘one method suits all’. The staff really take the time to get to know us and create a bespoke, thorough care plan. The entire visit is personalised for us; our care, our comfort, our activities, our food – everything. Our anxieties are listened to and every detail is considered.

My anxiety was through the roof before coming here. I didn’t know anyone and didn’t know if the staff would be able to look after me. I was worried people wouldn’t understand me. I love coming here now – I’m so comfortable here and really enjoy it.

— Aaron

The care team here are highly skilled medical staff. They know us, and know every little detail needed to care for us. There are so many caring people here. We have highly skilled nurses and carers. We have the Play Team, who host brilliant activities unique to our interests and abilities, and are a listening ear and shoulder to cry on. We have the housekeeping team, who pack our suitcases with clean fresh clothes ready to go home. And we have the catering team, who are incredibly talented at cooking for our individual needs, and often let us loose in the kitchen!

The food is completed tailored to us. The cooks consider our likes and dislikes, allergies, diets, how we eat, (buttons, pegs etc.), our method of eating and what we need help with. No one is left out with getting to eat and try the foods they want. They also consider the holistic approach to eating. Even if someone can’t physically eat, they can still get involved in cooking the food, exploring the textures and aromas; getting involved in the overall experience.

The equipment here is second to none. They have different types of mattresses to suit different levels of comfort, ventilators, hoists (including H-Frame hoists), piped oxygen and suction in every room. We can even go swimming due to the facilities and skilled staff here. They also have state of the art, en-suite bathrooms, with huge accessible baths and showers.

Jacksplace also has a Family Support team who support us in many different ways, from one-to-one counselling to holistic spiritual support. They’re also there for our families too, which is important to us.

The Family Support Counsellor at Jacksplace helped me with my anxiety throughout 2020. It really helped me and meant a lot.
