Types of gifts in wills
There are three principal ways to leave money to Naomi House in your Will:
1. By leaving a specific sum of money (a pecuniary gift). Remember, inflation will reduce the value of this type of gift over time.
Suggested wording for a pecuniary gift
“I give to Wessex Children’s Hospice Trust, Naomi House, Stockbridge Road, Sutton Scotney, Winchester, SO21 3JE, registered charity number 1002832, the sum of (money in words) (£x), free of Inheritance Tax for its general charitable purposes and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer for the time being or other duly authorised office shall be a sufficient discharge to my executors.”
2. By leaving an item to be sold and the proceeds given to Naomi House (a specific gift). This could be an item of jewellery or furniture.
Suggested wording for a specific gift
“I give to Wessex Children’s Hospice Trust, Naomi House, Stockbridge Road, Sutton Scotney, Winchester, SO21 3JE, registered charity number 1002832, (the item or items) to be sold and the proceeds, free of Inheritance Tax, to be used for its general charitable purposes and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer for the time being or other duly authorised office shall be a sufficient discharge to my executors.”
3. By leaving us some or all of the remainder of your belongings after you have provided for your loved ones (a residuary gift). After all other wishes and beneficiaries have been taken care of, all or a percentage of what’s left is given to the charity. This is an extremely effective way to help Naomi House as it is more inflation proof than the other two methods.
Suggested wording for a residuary gift:
“I give to Wessex Children’s Hospice Trust, Naomi House, Stockbridge Road, Sutton Scotney, Winchester, SO21 3JE, registered charity number 1002832, the residue / (x) percent of the residue (delete as appropriate) of my estate, free of Inheritance Tax, to be used for its general charitable purposes and I direct that the receipt of the Treasurer for the time being or other duly authorised office shall be a sufficient discharge to my executors.”
