jacksplace – a hospice designed to suit the needs of young people
jacksplace is the first hospice for young people with life-limiting conditions who live in Berkshire, Dorset, Hampshire, Surrey, West Sussex and Wiltshire.
Hospice care for young adults
Young people want to be independent and do as many things as possible for themselves. This is not easy if you have complex medical needs. Privacy is very difficult to achieve as well when you need assistance with everyday activities such as going to the toilet or having a shower.
The design of jacksplace, the new hospice for young people, helps young people with life limiting conditions to do as much as possible for themselves by using special technology. Visitors can operate curtains, doors and lighting using hi-tech remote controls and adjustable bathroom fittings mean that everyone who visits will be a comfortable in the new building.
Socialising with friends
jacksplace makes it possible for young people with life-limiting conditions to have the opportunity to spend time together in a friendly place. What teenager doesn’t want late nights, even later mornings and time away from the parents? jacksplace has large open communal areas for getting together with friends, talking, watching a film or chatting at suppertime.
The fun doesn’t stop there. The hydrotherapy pool is a great place to have fun, and the outdoor spaces give young people a place to let off steam playing wheelchair football, racing remote control cars and enjoying each other’s company.
End of life care
When a young person’s health deteriorates and eventually they reach the end of their life, the staff and facilities at jacksplace can offer support to the individual and their family. The hospice has a dedicated end of life suite consisting of a private bedroom, lounge and garden. The team at the hospice are trained to care for families at the end of the young person’s life and beyond. This care is dependent on the family’s wishes. The team can be available for as long as they are needed.
