Volunteer With Us

Volunteer With Us

Over 400 volunteers help Naomi House – we could not survive without our team of volunteers. Join them and help us to make a difference to children's lives.

"I found myself with some time to spare and wanted to volunteer as a way of giving something back to the community. I had heard about Naomi House and knew what a worthwhile cause it was. Volunteering is also of great benefit for me. It gets me out of the house, is an opportunity to meet new people and make new friends, and gives me new skills."

As Christmas approaches, particular help is required working with our Trading Company at Winnall during the months of October, November and December. You could help collate orders of Christmas cards and merchandise or distributing orders to our network of supporters. If you feel you could spare some time to help us in the busy weeks leading up to the festive period, please give us a call.

Kitchen

Our kitchen is the real centre of Naomi House! It is where all our great meals are made every day and where there is always a homemade cake or plate of biscuits to be found. Our cooks wouldn’t be able to create their specialities without the help of our volunteers and we always need help with:

  • 1. Food preparation
  • 2. Laying the table
  • 3. Washing up (kitchen equipment and crockery)
  • 4. General cleaning of the kitchen and dining room area

To make sure you can be confident in our kitchen, training will be given.

Housekeeping

We need volunteers to help support our care team with day-to-day housekeeping duties, which will include making sure our ten children’s bedrooms are always clean and bright. We need help with:

  • 1. Making beds
  • 2. Cleaning bathrooms
  • 3. Cleaning bedrooms
  • 4. Sorting laundry
  • 5. Ironing linen and children’s clothes
  • 6. One-off cleaning e.g. thoroughly cleaning a child’s room / cupboard / laundry cupboard

House maintenance

A house such as ours always needs maintenance work and attention and our Facilities Manager is always in need of assistance with this enormous job! If you enjoy carpentry or general DIY, we could really use your skills to help things run smoothly. Some of the more usual tasks include:

  • 1. Small general repair work
  • 2. Assisting with weekly fire tests
  • 3. Helping with general carpentry, electrical and plumbing jobs
  • 4. Helping to maintain garden furniture

Gardening

The gardens and grounds of Naomi House are enjoyed by everyone and are a place for our children to play or for our families to relax. All the children’s bedrooms look directly out onto the gardens, so enabling them to see a rainbow of colour outside that our team of gardeners create! A real feast for their eyes!

You can join the gardening team and help by:

  • 1. Assisting with grass cutting / weeding during the summer months
  • 2. Watering plants
  • 3. Cleaning the patio area and footpaths
  • 4. Leaf clearing
  • 5. Raking and levelling of gravel drives
  • 6. Gutter clearing
  • 7. General tidying

Vehicle Maintenance

Trust vehicles are used for a variety of reasons, from home visits to day trips out to the Zoo. We need volunteers to clean, maintain and drive our vehicles. If you wish to volunteer in this area, your responsibilities would include:

  • 1. General cleaning and valeting of Trust vehicles
  • 2. General maintenance checks including checking tyre pressures
  • 3. Checking water and oil levels, windscreen washers and wipers
  • 4. Inspection of tyres and warning instruments

Fundraising

As well providing assistance to the central fundraising team at the Fundraising Office in Winnall, you can volunteer out in the community, helping to raise both funds and awareness. You could join one of our support groups, local to your area, or become a "Community Contact" and help individually. Either way, you can help by:

  • 1. Finding homes for our collection boxes in your community and co-ordinating their collection and distribution
  • 2. Spreading the word about us by giving talks on our behalf or simply telling your family and friends
  • 3. Representing the Trust at cheque presentations
  • 4. Holding events in aid of Naomi House
  • 5. Help the Fundraising Team distribute marketing and fundraising material to other supporters
  • 6. Help co-ordinate our recycling programme and become a "Rubbish Ranger" (ask us for more details!)

Retail

Wessex Children’s Hospice Trust currently has seven retail outlets, situated at:

  • 1. Andover
  • 2. Boscombe
  • 3. Cosham
  • 4. Eastleigh
  • 5. Fareham
  • 6. Southampton
  • 7. Winchester

Our shops support Naomi House from the heart of your local community and there is an opportunity for everyone to help, whether you want to serve customers and work on a basic till, or at the back of the shop preparing goods for sale and keeping the shop fully stocked.

Play

If you would like to help in the care of the children and have some experience of working with or supervising children, you could join us as a play volunteer. You would help with various events in the House working under the direction of the play team which may include: arts/crafts, drama, outdoors activities, or supporting the team with the preparation and cleaning of playrooms and toys.

You will have an initial induction plan and training will be provided.

Group Volunteering

Whether you are a group of employees from a place of work or a social group, we always have group volunteer opportunities within the Trust where we need your help.

This could be at the House itself, spending a day with us working on an outside maintenance project. Or it may be helping us out with car park marshalling at our annual Open Days. Due to the nature of our work, group projects at the House are often limited by number, but we can also offer other "team building" projects that both benefit you as a group and support Naomi House at the same time.

We have a number of "challenge events" that we can organise for you, including sky-diving and white water rafting, both raising funds and your adrenaline levels! You can help organise collections in your local community or maybe a fundraising event such as a ball or a family fun day at your place of work. All these get you working together as well as volunteering your time.
